There is one rule in this whole course that matters more than the rest put together. It is short, it is easy, and it is the difference between AI saving you time and AI landing you in it. Learn this and you can start using AI properly today, without looking over your shoulder.

Why one rule is enough

Nearly every AI horror story, the invented court case, the wrong refund policy sent to a customer, the made-up statistic in a proposal, traces back to the same thing. Someone treated an AI answer as the final word instead of a first draft. Fix that one habit and you have handled the large majority of the risk in one go.

The rule

Here it is, and it is worth remembering exactly:

AI drafts, you check.

The machine gets you from a blank page to a solid first version in seconds, which is the genuinely useful part. You do the checking, which is the part your customers actually pay you for. Never let an unchecked AI answer reach a customer, a contract, an invoice or a tax return. Not because AI is dangerous, but because it does not know when it is wrong, so being the one who knows is your job.

Why you cannot skip the check

The uncomfortable truth is that AI has no sense of certainty. When it is right and when it is inventing, it sounds exactly the same: calm and confident. There is no wobble in its voice when it starts guessing. That is precisely why you cannot outsource the judgement to it, and why “it sounded sure” is never a reason to trust something. What checking actually looks like

It is lighter than it sounds, and it changes with the job.

• For ordinary words like an email, a bit of website copy, a social post: read it back and fix anything off or anything that does not sound like you. Usually a quick pass, because editing is faster than writing from scratch.
• For anything numeric, legal, or a promise to a customer like a price, a date, a policy, a tax point: treat the answer as a draft to verify against a real source. Your own system, your supplier, your accountant. Never as the last word.
• For anything about your specific business: assume it is guessing unless you have given it the facts in that conversation. It cannot see inside your company.

The mindset shift

Once “AI drafts, you check” is a habit rather than a rule you have to remember, something nice happens: you relax. You can hand it bolder, bigger jobs, because you know the safety net is you reading it at the end. The check is not a brake on using AI. It is the thing that lets you use it fearlessly.
