Your first ten minutes

Reading about AI is like reading about swimming. At some point you have to get in. This lesson is that. Ten minutes, one real task, and by the end you will have felt the value with your own eyes instead of taking anyone’s word for it.

Setting up (two minutes)

You do not need to buy anything or install anything clever. Open one of these in your browser and make a free account:

• ChatGPT (chatgpt.com)
• Claude (claude.ai)
• Gemini (gemini.google.com)

They are all a text box you type into, like a messaging app. For now it genuinely does not matter which you pick. The free version of any of them is plenty for learning. Choosing between them properly is a later job, and there is a whole tool on this site to help when you get there. Today, just pick one and open it.

The task (five minutes)

Do not start with something important. Start with something real but low-stakes, so a wobbly result costs you nothing. Here is a good first one that nearly every owner has to hand.

Find an email you have been putting off replying to. An awkward one is perfect. Paste it into the text box, then underneath it type something like:

Write a polite, clear, professional reply to this email. Keep it short. I run a small business and want it to sound friendly but straight to the point.

Press enter. In a few seconds you will have a full draft.

The bit that matters (three minutes)

Now read it back like an editor, not a spectator. This is the whole skill, so do not skip it.

Ask yourself: does it sound like me? Is anything wrong, made up or too formal? Is there a fact in there it could not possibly know, a date, a price, a name, that you need to correct?

Then change it. Cut a sentence. Warm up the opening. Fix any detail it invented. That editing pass is not a chore you do because the AI failed. It is the point. You just went from a blank page to a finished reply in a couple of minutes, and the only bit that needed your brain was the judgement, which is exactly the bit worth your time.

What just happened

Notice the shape of it, because every good use of AI has this shape:

1. You gave it words to work with (the email).
2. You told it plainly what you wanted (short, polite, sounds like a small business).
3. It produced a fast first draft.
4. You read it, corrected it, and made the call.

That is the loop. Draft from the machine, judgement from you. Get comfortable with those four steps on small jobs and you can point them at bigger ones with confidence.
