Build one automation, start to finish

Lesson 1 of 8

What you're building, and why this one

The one automation this whole course builds: a website enquiry that gets an instant reply and lands in a follow-up list. Here's what it does and why it's the right first build.

This course builds one thing. Not ten examples, not a tour of every tool out there. One real automation, built properly, lesson by lesson, until it is live in your own business. By the end you will have shipped something and understand the pattern well enough to build the next one on your own.

Here is what we are building: when someone fills in your website contact form, they get an instant reply confirming you have got their message, and their details land automatically in a follow-up list so nobody gets forgotten. No developer, no code, and you will be doing the actual clicking as you read, not just nodding along.

Why this one, out of everything you could build

There are hundreds of things you could automate. This course picks a website enquiry on purpose, for three reasons.

Nearly every business has one. Trades, salons, clinics, agencies, shops with an online side, all of them have some kind of “get in touch” form on the website. You do not need a special setup to follow along, you almost certainly already have the raw material.

It is where speed genuinely wins business. Someone filling in your form right now is warm. They are comparing you to two or three others, and the business that replies first, even with a quick “got it, we’ll be in touch shortly”, usually wins the job before anyone else has opened their inbox. An instant reply is not a nice-to-have here, it is often the whole difference.

It teaches the full pattern in one build. This one automation touches every idea you need for the next hundred: a trigger that starts things off, an action that does something useful, a filter that adds judgement, and a proper test before it goes anywhere near a real customer. Learn this shape once and you can point it at almost anything.

What you will actually have by the end

Not a plan, not a diagram, a live automation. Concretely: your form submissions will trigger an instant email reply to the person who filled it in, and their details will land as a new row in a simple spreadsheet you check when you are chasing leads. You will have tested it with your own fake enquiry and watched it work start to finish.

The tool we are using

We are building this in Zapier. It is the easiest place to start: a huge list of ready-made connections to other apps, a plain-English interface, and a free tier that covers everything in this course. If you have used Make before, or end up preferring it later, the ideas carry straight across, trigger, action, filter, test, they just live under slightly different menu names. Start with Zapier here. You are not marrying it.

What you need before lesson two

Nothing you do not already have: an email address, a Google account (free, and used for two of the free tools we lean on), and about ten minutes free right now if you want to keep pace with the setup in the next lesson. You do not need your actual live website form ready to go, we will show you a way to follow along today even if your real form is not connected yet.

One honest note before we start

You will occasionally hit a screen that looks slightly different from what is described here. Software moves buttons around. If that happens, look for the same idea rather than the exact wording, the concepts in this course (trigger, action, filter, test) outlast whatever a menu is called this month.

Next: creating your account and getting the two tools you are connecting ready to talk to each other.
